Tabanids may be identified by wing venation. The
R4 and R5 enclose the wing apex. They are
stout
bodied with
large eyes. They also have large calypters which
are basal expansions of the wings. The
elongate third antennal segment may appear to be
subdivided. In the females, the
proboscis is projecting and adapted for piercing.
